How to Export Highlights and Notes from an Online Textbook

If you need to keep something from a rented or web-only textbook, start with your own highlights and notes. They are smaller, easier to review, and often have an official export even when the book itself cannot be downloaded as PDF.

Short answer: Sync the reader, open Notes or Notebook, use its export or email command, add missing citation details, and open the result before access ends.

What different readers can export

The labels and outputs vary by service and title.

Check the current support page and your own title. A publisher can restrict how much source text accompanies your note.

Step 1: sync the device with the newest notes

Connect to the internet and open the book on the device where you last studied. Wait for sync to complete before exporting from another device.

Create a temporary test note such as "export check" with the current time, then confirm it appears in the Notes or Notebook list. Remove the test after the export is verified.

Step 2: find the study tools panel

Email

Citation manager

Copy within the allowance

Step 5: verify the file outside the reader

Open the export in the app you plan to use later. Search for the newest note and one note from an early chapter. Check special characters, equations, links, page references, and line breaks.

Count the chapters or notes if the reader shows a total. A successful download message does not guarantee the export contains every item.

Store the verified file in a clear path such as:

Keep one earlier export until the newer one has been checked.

When the export is incomplete

Try these fixes:

1. Reconnect and run or wait for the reader's normal sync.
2. Remove active filters in the Notes panel.
3. Export one chapter to learn whether size is the problem.
4. Try the web reader if the app lacks the export control, or the app if the web reader lacks it.
5. Contact support with the title, ISBN, device, and a screenshot of the missing notes.

Publisher clipping limits may explain why highlighted book text is shortened. Preserve your own summary and source location rather than looking for a way around the limit.

Should you capture the Notes panel as screenshots?

Text or PDF export is better because it stays searchable and editable. A screenshot is reasonable for your own notes when the reader has no export and the panel shows information that would otherwise be lost.

Capture a small sample first. Make sure every note is expanded, nothing is cut off, and the source location is visible.

Do not use the Notes panel as a route to reproduce more book text than the platform permits.

A practical export rhythm

• Export after your first real set of notes to test the feature.
• Export after a major exam or research milestone.
• Export before removing a device or reinstalling the app.
• Export before access expires, early enough to ask support about a failure.
• Export again after your final study session.
