How to check the resolution of a screenshot

  1. Choose one or more screenshots, or drop them anywhere on the page. PNG, JPG, HEIC, and WebP all work.
  2. Read the pixel size at the top of each result. That's the resolution: width × height in pixels.
  3. Check the Retina scale. The tool recognizes full-screen iPhone, iPad, and Mac sizes, and the 144 DPI value macOS writes into Retina captures.
  4. Compare the size in points with a design file or app layout. The print size shows how large the image prints at 300 or 150 DPI.

What does a screenshot's resolution tell you?

Screenshot resolution is the number of pixels a capture holds, written as width × height. The same window can be captured at different sizes depending on the screen. A Retina screenshot stores two or three pixels for every point of the interface, so it comes out two or three times as wide as the layout it shows.

DPI is a separate value stored in the file. It doesn't add or remove pixels. It only tells a printer or layout app how large to place the image. macOS writes 144 DPI into Retina captures, which is why the tool reads it as a clue to the scale. How sharp a screen looks depends on its pixel density, the number of pixels per inch of display.

The aspect ratio is the shape of the image, its width relative to its height. The tool names the closest common ratio, such as 16:10 or 19.5:9, and shows the exact value beside it, so you can see whether a capture fits a slide, a video frame, or a store listing without cropping.

Frequently asked questions

Is this screenshot resolution checker free?

Yes. There's no signup and nothing to install. You can check up to 30 images at a time.

Are my screenshots uploaded to a server?

No. The pixel size and file header are read in your browser, so your images stay on your device.

How do I find the resolution of a screenshot?

Drop it here and read the width × height in pixels. On a Mac, you can also select the file in Finder, press Command-I, and look under More Info. On Windows, right-click the file, choose Properties, and open the Details tab.

Why is my Mac screenshot twice the size of my screen?

A Retina display draws two pixels for every point. A 14-inch MacBook Pro that looks like 1512 × 982 at its default setting captures screenshots at 3024 × 1964 pixels. The size in points shows the layout size you see.

Does DPI affect screenshot quality?

No. DPI is a print setting stored in the file. A screenshot saved at 72 DPI and the same one at 144 DPI have identical pixels and look the same on screen. Only the printed size changes.

Why does it say the Retina scale is unclear?

The size doesn't match a full-screen iPhone, iPad, or Mac capture, and the file doesn't store the 144 DPI macOS uses for Retina. That's common for cropped captures from phones or Windows and for images another app has re-saved. Compare the sizes in points with the layout you expect.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. Pick screenshots from your photo library, including HEIC files from an iPhone.

Need screenshots at the same size every time?

Shotomatic captures the same screen, window, or area on your Mac at an interval you set, so every shot in a series comes out the same size.
