Split Image

Cut a photo or screenshot into a grid of equal pieces, or split a long image into slices of the same height. It all happens in your browser, so your image is never uploaded.

How to split an image

  1. Select Choose an image, or drop or paste a JPG, PNG, WebP, or HEIC image onto the page. The image can be up to 50 MB.
  2. Under Split by, choose Grid to cut the image into rows and columns, or Slices to cut a tall image into pieces of a set height.
  3. For Grid, set Rows and Columns or pick one of the Common grids. For Slices, type a Slice height in pixels or pick an Aspect ratio such as A4 or 4:5. The preview shows where each cut falls.
  4. Pick JPG or PNG under Format, then select Download ZIP. Each piece is saved as a numbered file, such as photo-01.png.

How the pieces are cut

Grid divides the image into equal rows and columns, with up to 20 rows, 20 columns, and 100 pieces in total. When the size doesn't divide evenly, the leftover pixels are spread across the pieces, so no two differ by more than 1 pixel. The shape of each piece comes from the image's aspect ratio and the grid: a 3240 × 1080 px image cut into 1 row and 3 columns gives three 1080 × 1080 px squares.

Slices cut a tall image, such as a full-page screenshot, into full-width pieces of the same height, starting from the top. The Aspect ratio presets set that height from the image width: A4 gives each slice the shape of a portrait page, 4:5 matches a portrait feed post, and 9:16 matches a story. The last slice keeps whatever height is left, so it's usually shorter. To put the slices into one PDF, add them in order to the image to PDF converter. To join images back into one long image, use Stitch Screenshots.

Pieces are cut from the original pixels and never resized. PNG keeps them lossless, along with any transparency. JPG makes smaller files and fills transparent areas with white. Some browsers can't save an image of more than about 16.8 million pixels (4096 × 4096 px) or one longer than 16,384 px on a side. If a piece is bigger than that, the tool asks you to add rows or columns, or to use a shorter slice height.

Frequently asked questions

Is this image splitter free?

Yes. There's no signup and no watermark. You can split one image of up to 50 MB into as many as 100 pieces.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Your browser cuts the image on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and closing the tab clears the image.

How do I split an image for an Instagram carousel?

For a panorama that runs across the slides, choose Grid with 1 row and 2 or 3 columns. The pieces come out square when the image is 2 or 3 times as wide as it is tall. For a tall image such as an infographic, choose Slices and pick 1:1 or 4:5. The last slice gets the leftover height, so check it before you post.

How do I split a long screenshot into A4 pages?

Choose Slices and pick A4. Each slice keeps the screenshot's full width and takes the shape of a portrait A4 page, and the last one keeps what's left. A cut can land in the middle of a line of text, so change the Slice height if a line gets split.

What order are the files in?

Pieces are numbered left to right, then top to bottom, the way you read a page. The numbers start with zeros, such as photo-01.png to photo-12.png, so the files sort correctly in any folder. All pieces come in one ZIP named after the image, such as photo-split.zip.

Why can't I add more rows or columns?

A grid can have up to 20 rows, 20 columns, and 100 pieces, so with 10 rows the most you can have is 10 columns. In Slices, the shortest height you can set is the one that keeps it to 100 slices. A very small image also limits the grid, because each piece needs at least 1 pixel.

Should I save the pieces as PNG or JPG?

PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, so it suits screenshots, text, and diagrams. JPG makes smaller files for photos but turns transparent areas white. The tool starts with JPG for JPG and HEIC photos and PNG for everything else.

Splitting long screenshots into pages?

Shotomatic takes a series of screenshots on your Mac and presses a key or clicks between shots, so you can capture a long page one screen at a time. Export the series as images, a ZIP file, or a single PDF.
