Can I Move an Online eTextbook to GoodNotes or Acrobat?

You can move an online eTextbook to another app only when the service provides a portable file that the destination app supports. An offline download inside a proprietary reader is not that file.

Short answer: Look for an official PDF, EPUB, or DRM-free download. If the reader only offers app-based offline access, keep the book in that app or request an approved alternative.

The extension and license both matter. A file can look like a PDF yet still have restrictions, and a "downloaded" book may have no visible file at all. Goodnotes currently lists PDF and JPG/PNG images among its supported imports, but not EPUB.

Moving a textbook to GoodNotes

GoodNotes works best with a normal PDF. Use the textbook service's own Download PDF, Print to PDF, or Save to PDF command. Import only the file and pages the publisher allows.

RedShelf can create a PDF for a permitted page range and can optionally include notes and highlights. BibliU's Save to PDF feature also converts permitted pages into a PDF and shows the remaining allowance. Those official outputs are the clearest route to a notes app.

An offline copy in Pearson+, VitalSource Bookshelf, Cengage Read, McGraw Hill ReadAnywhere, Kortext, or Perlego cannot normally be dragged into GoodNotes. The app has no portable file to receive.

If the reader provides a notes export, consider importing that smaller document instead. Pearson+ exports Notebook content as PDF. This may solve the actual study task without duplicating book pages.

Before using a limited page allowance, import one representative permitted page. Check its page size, diagram quality, searchable text, and annotation behavior in Goodnotes. A successful one-page test is better evidence than consuming the allowance on a file that imports badly.

Opening a textbook in Preview or Adobe Acrobat

Preview and Acrobat open ordinary PDFs. They do not turn browser cache, app data, or an ACSM authorization file into a document.

For a ProQuest Ebook Central protected loan, the .acsm file is opened in Adobe Digital Editions, not Acrobat. ADE uses it to retrieve the authorized EPUB or PDF and enforce the loan period. A DRM-free ProQuest record can provide a normal PDF or EPUB instead.

If a PDF opens but text cannot be selected, it may be an image-only scan or have copying restrictions. Check the service's license before using OCR or other processing. A searchable OCR layer can improve discovery but does not recreate perfect source text.

Moving a textbook to an e-reader

E-readers vary more than note apps. Check both file support and app support.

• A DRM-free EPUB is usually the most flexible ebook format.
• A PDF preserves pages but can be awkward on a small screen.
• An Adobe Digital Editions loan requires a compatible authorization and transfer workflow.
• A reader-only subscription book can move only if the service offers an app for that device.

Perlego's official download guide says books cannot be exported to a personal e-reader, and Kindle devices do not support the Perlego app. VitalSource titles remain in Bookshelf. Amazon now offers EPUB or PDF downloads only for eligible DRM-free Kindle purchases, not every Kindle title.

Why copying the app's files does not work

An offline reader may store encrypted resources, fonts, page images, indexes, and authorization data separately. Copying the folder or changing an extension does not assemble a valid ebook. It can also violate the reader's terms and break your offline access.

Use only the controls shown to you by the service. If an export is not present, ask support whether your ISBN has a different edition or accessibility format.

Choose the output based on the task

Look for an official PDF or permitted page export. If unavailable, use the reader's built-in annotation tools and export your notes if possible.

You want larger text or assistive technology

Try the reader's reflow, font, contrast, read-aloud, keyboard, and screen-reader features. If they are insufficient, contact the accessibility office. An approved EPUB may work better than PDF because it reflows.

You want to cite a few passages

Use the reader's citation, copy allowance, or notes export. Record the edition and page or location. Recreating the whole book is unnecessary.

You want a permanent personal library

Before buying, choose a listing that explicitly supplies a DRM-free PDF or EPUB. A time-limited reader license is a different product even when the checkout button says buy.

When screenshot capture is appropriate

Screenshots can document your own content, openly licensed material, public-domain pages, a display problem, or another selection you have permission to save. They are not a general route from a protected reader into GoodNotes.
