How to Download Google Play Books as PDF on a Mac
Google Play Books lets you export some purchases as EPUB or PDF. See the steps on a Mac, why Export can be missing, and how to read or print the book.

Google doesn't list a Play Books app for Mac, so on a Mac you read your library in a web browser. When you want a file you can keep, Google offers an Export option for some purchases that downloads the book as an EPUB or PDF. This guide covers the export steps on a Mac, what to do with an ACSM file, why Export can be missing, and how to read, print, or save notes when the book can't be exported.
Short answer: On play.google.com, click your profile picture, open Library & devices, then Books, and choose More > Export > Download PDF next to the book. If the publisher doesn't allow export, or the book is a rental, read it in the browser instead and save your notes to Google Drive.
What you can do with Google Play Books on a Mac
The right route depends on what you need:
| What you want | Route on a Mac |
|---|---|
| Read the book | Web reader at play.google.com/books |
| A PDF or EPUB file | Export, if the publisher allows it |
| Read without internet | Exported file on the Mac, or the Play Books phone and tablet apps |
| Print pages | Download the book first; publisher limits apply |
| Keep your highlights and notes | Save annotations to Google Drive |
Start with Export. If it isn't available for your book, the other rows still cover most reasons for wanting a PDF.
Download a Google Play book as PDF or EPUB
These steps work in any browser on your Mac:
- Go to play.google.com and sign in with the account that bought the book.
- Click your profile picture at the top right.
- Click Library & devices, then Books.
- Next to the book, click More, then Export.
- Choose Download PDF or Download EPUB.
Pick PDF for fixed pages and EPUB for text that reflows to fit the window. Google suggests opening a PDF in Chrome or Acrobat Reader, and an EPUB in an app such as Apple Books or Adobe Digital Editions.
Open the file once before you rely on it, especially before a trip.
If you get an ACSM file instead
Some exports download a small ACSM file rather than the book itself. Google says you need extra software for these: install the free Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) on your Mac, then open the ACSM file with it. ADE downloads the EPUB or PDF and keeps it in its library.
Since June 1, 2026, ADE signs in with a ByteBooks ID instead of an Adobe ID. To keep access to books you already downloaded, use the same email address for your ByteBooks ID that you used for your Adobe ID. ADE also needs to be authorized on each new device before your books open there.
When we checked on October 16, 2026, Google's export help showed a notice that the ADE export service was unavailable for previously downloaded EPUBs, while new EPUB downloads still worked. If an older export fails, check the help page for the current status.
Why Export is missing or fails
Google lists several cases where you can't export a book:
- the publisher doesn't allow file exports;
- the book is a rental;
- the book file is too large;
- the book isn't supported for export.
Google also notes that most books from Google Play won't open on a Kindle device. If you need a printable edition that Export doesn't provide, check whether the publisher sells a PDF or print version. Don't use tools that remove copy protection from Play Books purchases.
Read Google Play Books on a Mac without downloading
Google documents no Play Books app for Mac. Open play.google.com/books in your browser, go to your library, and select the book. Some books offer two layouts: Original pages, which usually matches the printed edition, and Flowing text, where you can change the font, text size, and line spacing. Not every book offers both.
Google documents offline reading only in the Play Books apps for Android and for iPhone and iPad. The web reader on a Mac needs a connection, so for offline reading on a Mac you need an exported file. If the book can't be exported, download it in the Play Books app on your phone or tablet instead.
Print from Google Play Books
Google says you need to download the ebook to your computer before printing, so printing starts with Export. Publishers can also limit how much of a book you can print. If Export isn't available for the book, Google documents no printing route for it.
Save your highlights and notes to Google Drive
For a study book, your notes may be the part you need most. Play Books can save them to Google Drive:
- Open the book in the web reader.
- At the top right, click More, then Save annotations to Google Drive.
- Turn on Save annotations to Google Drive.
Play Books then keeps the notes and highlights for that book in one Google Doc. To save only part of them, such as one color of highlights, open Annotations, click More, and choose Export annotations. In Google Docs, File > Download > PDF Document turns the notes into a PDF.
Make a copy of the Doc before you edit it. Google says your changes are deleted when you add new notes to the same book. Highlights can also be missing from the Doc when the publisher turned off copying or you passed the publisher's copy limit.
If the book is a PDF you uploaded
Books you uploaded to Play Books are your own PDF or EPUB files, so the original file on your Mac is already the copy to keep. Google says highlights, notes, and bookmarks sync across devices for PDFs uploaded after January 20, 2026.
If you also buy books from Apple, our guide to Apple Books and PDF on a Mac covers what Apple's Books app allows. For Kindle purchases, see downloading Kindle books as PDF.
A practical decision checklist
Ask these questions in order:
- Does Export appear next to the book? Download the PDF or EPUB and open it once.
- Did you get an ACSM file? Open it in Adobe Digital Editions with your ByteBooks ID.
- Is Export missing? Read in the browser, or download the book in the phone or tablet app for offline reading.
- Do you mainly need your highlights? Save annotations to Google Drive and download the Doc as a PDF.
- Is the material your own or something you're allowed to capture? Only then consider a screenshot PDF.
Do you need a screenshot PDF?
Usually no. An exported EPUB or PDF, the phone app's offline copy, or your saved notes keeps the real text. A PDF made from screenshots stores each page as an image instead:
- text no longer reflows for a smaller screen;
- search depends on OCR, which can misread equations and small type;
- the file is usually larger than the exported book;
- highlights and notes become part of the image.
Shotomatic is not an alternative to Play Books export, the Play Books apps, or the publisher's limits on printing and export.
