Protect PDF: Add a Password to a PDF in Your Browser

New free Protect PDF tool that adds an AES-256 open password to a PDF on your device and downloads a protected copy, leaving the original unchanged.

Shotomatic Protect PDF adding a password to a PDF

We shipped a new free Protect PDF tool in Shotomatic. Choose a PDF, set a password, and download a protected copy that asks for the password before it opens. Every file is processed on your device.

What's New

  • Add an open password to a PDF with AES-256 encryption (PDF 2.0)
  • Enter the password twice, under Password and Confirm password
  • Click the eye icon to check what you typed
  • Download a protected copy while the original file stays unchanged

What the Password Does

The password is needed to open the PDF. It doesn't restrict printing or copying: anyone who opens the file with the password can print, copy, fill in, and edit it.

There is no way to recover a forgotten password. Open the protected copy once with your password before you send it, and share the password through a different channel than the file.

Limits

  • One PDF at a time, up to 100 MB
  • Passwords up to 127 characters, using A to Z, a to z, 0 to 9, spaces, and keyboard symbols
  • PDFs that already have a password are not accepted

Fast Workflow

  1. Open Protect PDF
  2. Choose a PDF or drop it onto the page
  3. Enter the password under Password and Confirm password
  4. Click Download protected PDF
  5. Open the copy once with the password to check it
